Any of about 1,000 species of plants. The greek word gymnospermos means “naked seeds”, and refers to the fact that gymnosperm plants (conifers, cycads, and allies) have their seeds not enclosed within an ovary, but instead develop their seed either on the surface of scale or leaf-like appendages of cones or at the ends of short stalks.
